SUMMARY:L0102: Science of Disaster
DESCRIPTION:This course is part of the National Emergency Management Basic Academy being offered in FY25. \nAdditional courses are: \nL0101: Foundations of Emergency Management (February 10-14\, 2025) \nL0103: Planning: Emergency Operations (April 24-25\, 2025) \nL0105: Public Information Basics (March 26-28\, 2025) \nL0146: Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program Training Course (March 24-25\, 2025) \nIt is not necessary to attend all of the courses in this sequence. \nThis course provides the participants with an overview of scientific principles and concepts that shape our increasingly dangerous world. The contents of the course include the following: \n\nIntroduction to Science of Disaster provides a definition and benefits of science.\nEarth Science describes how the Earth’s design sets the stage for the world’s natural hazards including earthquakes\, volcanic eruptions\, tsunamis\, and landslides/sinkholes.\nClimatology describes the scientific basis of common atmospheric hazards including convective storms\, tropical cyclones\, and other hazardous weather.\nChemical and biological basics identify the scientific basis of chemical and biological threats.\nExplosive\, radiological\, and nuclear fundamentals identify the scientific basis of those threats.\n\nCourse Objectives: \n\nIndicate how earth science principles and processes influence natural hazards\, including earthquakes\, volcanic eruptions\, tsunamis\, ground failures\, and floods.\nIndicate how climatological principles and processes influence natural hazards\, including convective storms\, tropical cyclones\, nor’easters\, winter storms\, temperature extremes\, and droughts.\nIndicate how chemical and biological principles and processes influence natural and human-caused hazards and impact society.\nIndicate the scientific basis for explosive\, radiological\, and nuclear hazards and their impact on society.\nIndicate how scientific understanding can improve emergency preparedness.\n\nPrerequisites: \nRecommended: \n\nIS 0100.b – Introduction to the Incident Command System\nICS 120.a. – An Introduction to Exercise\nIS 0200.b. – ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents\nIS 0230.d – Fundamentals of Emergency Management\nIS 0700.a – National Incident Management System\, An Introduction\nIS 0800.b – National Response Framework\, An Introduction
