SUMMARY:L0101: Foundations of Emergency Management
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: \nThe Emergency Management Institute\, in conjunction with the National Emergency Management Association; the International Association of Emergency Managers; and state\, local\, territorial\, and tribal emergency management professionals have established training objectives to meet the professional development needs of emergency managers. \nThe following topics in emergency management are covered in this course: \n\nlegal issues\nintergovernmental and interagency context\ninfluencing and organizing\nsocial vulnerability issues\ncollaboration\, preparedness\, and team building\nmitigation\, response\, recover\, prevention\, and protection\nethical decision making\ntechnology\nadministration\nthe future of emergency management\n\nIt is mandatory that participants complete the 45 hours of IS prerequisite courses\, as well as\, the 40 hours classroom instruction in order to receive full credit for the course. Not meeting these requirements will result in participants needing to re-take the entire classroom portion of the course. \nCourse Goal: \nAt completion of this course\, students will have a basic knowledge of the history of doctrine and authorities of emergency management\, the role of the emergency manager\, and an overview of all hazards. \nPrerequisites: \nEleven online independent study courses are required as prerequisites to the classroom course. All eleven must be completed before attending the classroom portion of the course. Proof of completion of these online courses is required. \n\nIS 100 (most current version) – Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS)\nIS-120.c – An Introduction to Exercises\nIS-200 (most current version) – ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents\nIS 230.d – Fundamentals of Emergency Management\nIS 235.c – Emergency Planning\nIS 240.b – Leadership and Influence\nIS 241.b – Decision Making and Problem Solving\nIS 242.b – Effective Communication\nIS 244.b – Developing and Managing Volunteers\nIS 700 (most current version) – National Incident Management System (NIMS)\, An Introduction\nIS 800 (most current version) – National Response Framework\, An Introduction\n\nContinuing Education Units (CEU’s): \nEMI awards 4.0 CEUs for completion of this course. \nTarget Audience: \nThis course is intended for newly appointed emergency managers from Federal\, state\, local\, tribal\, and territorial emergency management agencies\, and prospective professionals transferring from another discipline to emergency management.
