SUMMARY:L0102: Science of Disaster
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: \nThis course provides the participants with an overview of scientific principles and concepts that shape our increasingly dangerous world. The contents of the course include the following: \n\nIntroduction to Science of Disaster provides a definition and benefits of science.\nEarth Science describes how the Earth’s design sets the stage for the world’s natural hazards including earthquakes\, volcanic eruptions\, tsunamis\, and landslides/sinkholes.\nClimatology describes the scientific basis of common atmospheric hazards including convective storms\, tropical cyclones\, and other hazardous weather.\nChemical and biological basics; identifies the scientific basis of chemical and biological threats.\nExplosive\, radiological\, and nuclear fundamentals; identifies the scientific basis of those threats.\n\nIt is mandatory that the participant complete all 16 hours of this course to receive full credit. Anything less will result in the participant’s need to re-register for another course and start from the beginning. \nPrerequisites: \nIf a participant is taking this course as part of the Academy\, then \nhe or she should take E0101\, Foundations of Emergency Management\, first (but not required). If a participant is taking this course on its own for its science information and not in fulfillment of the Academy requirements\, there are no prerequisites. \nContinuing Education Units (CEU’s): \nEMI awards 2.4 CEUs for completion of this course. \nTarget Audience: \nThis course is intended for newly appointed emergency managers from Federal\, state\, local\, tribal\, and territorial emergency management agencies\, and prospective professionals transferring from another discipline to emergency management adults.
