L0101: Foundations of Emergency Management

Course Description:

The Emergency Management Institute, in conjunction with the National Emergency Management Association; the International Association of Emergency Managers; and state, local, territorial, and tribal emergency management professionals have established training objectives to meet the professional development needs of emergency managers.

The following topics in emergency management are covered in this course:

It is mandatory that participants complete the 45 hours of IS prerequisite courses, as well as, the 40 hours classroom instruction in order to receive full credit for the course. Not meeting these requirements will result in participants needing to re-take the entire classroom portion of the course.

Course Goal:

At completion of this course, students will have a basic knowledge of the history of doctrine and authorities of emergency management, the role of the emergency manager, and an overview of all hazards.

Prerequisites:

Eleven online independent study courses are required as prerequisites to the classroom course. All eleven must be completed before attending the classroom portion of the course. Proof of completion of these online courses is required.

Continuing Education Units (CEU’s):

EMI awards 4.0 CEUs for completion of this course.

Target Audience:

This course is intended for newly appointed emergency managers from Federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial emergency management agencies, and prospective professionals transferring from another discipline to emergency management.
